Alien Escape from Area 51

A “Daytime ET”!

Running along the fringe of the mysterious Area 51, this stretch of highway (375) has an overwhelming number of reported UFO sightings. So much so, that in 1996 the federal government officially named highway 375 the “Extraterrestrial Highway”. The ET Highway has become a gathering place for UFO enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. With elevations ranging from roughly 4000-5600 feet, the high desert will enchant you with gorgeous vegetation, surrounding mountains, and stunning vistas.

Annually since 2007, Calico Racing has hosted the Extraterrestrial Full Moon Midnight race each August, closest to the full moon. Given the midnight start time, the ET Midnight race offers cool temperatures despite being August in Nevada. ET participants run under bright moonlit skies while counting shooting stars- it is truly magical! But yet- most have never actually SEEN the course!

Traditionally the ET course ends at the Little A’le’Inn. But in 2020 due to COVID-19 the course was changed to an out and back from the Black Mailbox. The course was a hit among runners, so it returns in this “Daytime ET” called Alien Escape from Area 51.

In stark contrast to the August race, Alien Escape is during the day (actually SEE the beautiful high desert serenity!) and during late fall- so expect COLD morning temperatures, perfect for running!

“COVID Born” Race: Calico Racing was the first organization to host a race in Southern Nevada amid COVID-19 with our 14th annual ET race on August 1, 2020. The permitting agency approved our COVID mitigation plan and we were extremely pleased with complete participant compliance! Since Alien Escape will be an exact (daytime) replica of the ET race we just hosted in August 2020, I feel very confident in our ability to race November 15, 2020!

Devil After Dark

About Devil After Dark Race:  Over the years, one of my favorite times at our Running with the Devil extreme heat race in late June is when the sun sets, and the night air just beckons you to be outside and run! Devil After Dark brings you that magic with a late summer evening run.

Commencing just before sunset, run through Lovell Canyon while enjoying the stunning sunset as day falls into night. Sun is replaced by stars and moonlight lights the way. The omnipresence of the surrounding canyon under the moonlit starry night is magical! Pinion Juniper trees dance in the shadows and the neon lights of Las Vegas are just minutes away. An enchanted late summer evening run.

COVID-19 Promise: As the COVID-19 global pandemic is still unfolding, Calico Racing’s promise to you:

Once in a Blue Moon

Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us on March 31, 2018 for this special edition Once in a DOUBLE Blue Moon event! Stay tuned for our next Blue Moon event, date TBD.

A “Blue Moon” is the name given to the second full moon in a calendar month. Since there are roughly 29.5 days between full moons, it is unusual for two full moons to occur in a 30 or 31 day month (and impossible to fit into a 28 or 29 day month, so February can never have a Blue Moon). The saying “Once in a Blue Moon” means a rare occurrence; on average there will be one Blue Moon every 2.5 years. Calico Racing has celebrated the Blue Moon in 2012, 2015, and will again in 2018.

Once in a DOUBLE Blue Moon: In 2018 we will celebrate something truly rare, a situation which only takes place about four times a century: two Blue Moons occurring in the same year. The last time this happened was in 1999, and after 2018 we won’t have a double blue moon again until 2037, 2067, and 2094! Sounds like a good excuse to party!

You can choose from the following start times, or DOUBLE DOWN and run both!

  • 8am: Start of the morning race: 1/2 Marathon, 10K, and 5K all together
  • 6:45pm: Start of the evening race: 1/2 Marathon, 10K, and 5K all together
  • DOUBLE DOWN and run both! You may deduct $5 from the combined entry fees if you are running any combination of DAY and NIGHT races. No code required- it is encoded into the online registration platform. When registering online, choose your morning and evening race distances, the $5 multi-event discount will be deducted in your cart.

NOV 22 UPDATE: Nevada Governor has imposed a 3 week “pause” on a variety of business activity, which MAY affect our event. This pause expires on Tuesday of race week, and at this time is uncertain what will happen thereafter.  I am making several changes to the event format to put decisions in our favor, as much to the extent as I can. This includes small groups of 50 who come and leave prior to the next group of 50, etc.  Current registrants look for an email from me sent Nov 22 around 7:45pm. For the time being, additional registrations for the LIVE event are accepting waitlist only.  As of Nov 22, registrations prior to Nov 22 at 6:30pm, the 5K and 10K will move to a 7am start time together, and combined has reached the 50 person cap (accepting waitlist). The Half Marathon will start at 9am. Currently 35 are registered for the 1/2 Marathon, so we will have room for 15 more, but are currently only accepting waitlist, and will be chosen in the order received.  The 5K start times of 12:30pm; 2pm; and 3:30pm have just been created and thus have 0 registrants so far, so assuming we are allowed 50 per group, we would have room for 50 people per each of those times. We are currently only accepting waitlist, and will be chosen in the order received.  Diligently working and fighting for our ability to race. I appreciate your trust and patience. Registration for the “Mystery Box” Virtual Race remains open!

COVID-19 Promise: As the COVID-19 global pandemic is still unfolding, Calico Racing’s promise to you:

  1. If we are forced to cancel or postpone the event, registrants will receive a 100% transfer of the net entry fee/ add-ons paid into ANY Calico Racing event, good for 1 year (USA), or 2 years (International), based on address on your registration. The entry fee of the race that you are transferring into will be determined by the pricing schedule for that event on the date you complete your registration into the new race. No refund of any difference, if applicable, will be issued.
  2. We will continue to keep you informed as information becomes available and decisions are made.
  3. Once we are finally able to race, we will continue to provide you with a clean and safe environment to race; and will implement additional measures to ensure the health and safety of our community as necessary.

Purple Run

Let’s Go Crazy
Dearly beloved
We are gathered here (Sunset Park) today
To get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you
There’s something else
The afterworld

….In 1984 Prince and the Revolution famously sang those lyrics to open both the album and film, titled “Purple Rain“.  Sadly, on April 21, 2016 the earthly reign of the Purple Rain creator came to a tragic and premature end. At this anniversary, we will gather not only to “get through” this thing called life- but to CELEBRATE this iconic “Pop Life” figure.

Whether you were a fan of this “Musicology” legend or not, just like the color purple, or love the number “7” like Prince did, “Gett Off” the couch and “Let’s Go Crazy” and party like it’s “1999“.

Costumes are highly encouraged! Grab your “Raspberry Beret” or at least your favorite purple running gear- “Hot thing“, you know “U Got the Look“!

NOTE: The color Purple is also associated with several different causes. Unlike the color pink, which is almost exclusively linked to Breast Cancer Awareness, the color Purple is associated with a variety of causes. Among them include Alzheimer’s Disease, Animal Abuse, Eating Disorders, and Victims of 9/11 to name a few. You can read more here.  Whatever the cause closest to you, I invite you to join us- We Run As One!

**We will be offering 5K, 10K, and 1/2 Marathon Distances in the morning only.

COVID-19 Promise: As the COVID-19 global pandemic is still unfolding, Calico Racing’s promise to you:
