Course

This 3 day running festival gets inside the heart of Valley of Fire State Park, not only admiring the view, but BEING the view! The courses take you deep into sections of Valley of Fire seen by fractions of a percentage of visitors. This 1/2 Marathon Distance Stage Race is Fully Supported and Full of Adventure! Each days' course is uniquely different, equally spectacular, and "all highlights" from start to finish!

Run a 1/2 Marathon each of 3 days; or join for just one or 2 days. On Day 3 we open the event up to runners in a 8.25 mile or 5K distance. Limited space is available in the event, so don't hesitate in registering for this unique, fun, challenging, and awe inspiring event!

**With a generous cut off each day, runners, hikers, and walkers are all welcome to join us!

FRIDAY, 1/2 MARATHON

Friday's 1/2 Marathon course is point to point. After arriving at Camp Calico all athletes will be transported to the start line for a 9am start.

Commencing at White Domes runners will start off with some downhill paved miles to allow for the crowd to space out. You'll run past sites including Duck Rock and the Rock of Gibraltar before hopping onto the trail at mile 1.5. You'll traverse the psychedelic sandstone formation, Fire Wave before jumping into a soft sandy wash for several hundred feet through Rainbow Canyon- my favorite spot in all of Valley of Fire! Through the rainbow colored slot canyon you're back up onto the pavement at mile 2.5 for a few more downhill paved miles to shake out your legs until aid station 1 at race mile 5.4 at Fire Canyon. Leaving the pavement behind, Silica Dome guides our way as runners go deep into the canyons and washes of Valley of Fire! Hidden nooks, deep crevices, powder sand beaches are explored before climbing up and over the rocky point to The Cabins- primitive native sandstone huts built in the 1930s as a shelter for passing travelers.  Aid station 2 is located here at mile 8.35. A quick road crossing later, you level civilization behind again as you cross Valley of Fire Wash and head westerly on Old Arrowhead Road Trail. This open desert trail used to be the main route linking Nevada, Utah, and California and artifacts from a century ago can still be found along the trail. After 13.1 desert miles, Camp Calico is like a mirage welcoming you to the finish line! Approximately 51% hard packed trail; 31% pavement; 11% soft sand; 7% sandstone/ rocky trail. 6 Hours Cut Off.

SATURDAY, 1/2 MARATHON

Saturday's 1/2 Marathon starts and finishes at Camp Calico, with a 7am start time. 1/4 Mile of pavement allows for runners to space out and find their pace before taking a right at Bee Hives onto the trail, passing sites including Indian Marbles and Petrified Logs. Crossing over the pavement toward Atlatl Rock, runners turn right through an open desert section heading east, enjoying the sunrise glow over the sandstone cliffs. At the base of Prospect Trail runners turn north and run the west side of the ridge toward White Domes. This outback trail climbs up, over, into and around Valley of Fire Wash encountering all of the majestic colors of sandstone- reds, oranges, beige, yellow, white to muted purple! Slot canyons, slick rock, soft sand, a defunct movie set, and smooth runnable trail will all be enjoyed as you make your way to the top of Prospect Trail where the aid station awaits your arrival at mile 6.55. Filled up with water and nourishment runners turn around and retrace their steps back to Camp Calico. Approximately 80% hard packed trail; 4% pavement; 8% soft sand; 8% sandstone/ rocky trail. 6 Hours Cut Off.

SUNDAY, 1/2 MARATHON

Sunday's 1/2 Marathon starts and finishes at Camp Calico, with a 7am start time. 1/4 Mile of pavement allows for runners to space out and find their pace, crossing Valley of Fire Highway and joining up with the hard packed dirt Atlatl Scenic Loop, passing Grand Piano, Face in the Rock, Arch Rock, and Atlatl Rock en route to the aid station. This same aid station can be accessed multiple times at your mile 1.8, 6.55, and 11.3 allowing numerous opportunities to replenish yourself. At mile 1.8 runners will head left onto Pinnacles Trail for a clockwise loop covering open desert before passing White Rock and crossing The Saddle to the Pinnacles. This veritable rock gnome garden may just be the pinnacle of your Valley of Fire adventure! Crossing back along open desert trail littered with colorful cacti runners reach the aid station at mile 6.55 before turning around for a counter clockwise loop of Pinnacles Trail, then back to the finish line at Camp Calico. Approximately 80% hard packed trail; 4% pavement; 8% soft sand; 8% sandstone/ rocky trail. 6 Hours Cut Off

SUNDAY, 8.25 MILER

Sunday's 8.25 Miler starts and finishes at Camp Calico, with a 7am start time, together with the 1/2 Marathoners. This same aid station can be accessed multiple times at your mile 1.8 and 6.55, allowing numerous opportunities to replenish yourself.
